How to Form Sequences and Sets in 13 Card Rummy
In 13-card rummy sequence formation and set formation is how you achieve the objective of scoring zero. Here is how you form sequences and sets in rummy.
13 Card Rummy: Sequence
In 13 cards rummy, a sequence is a group of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit. There
are two types of sequences in rummy: pure sequences and impure sequences.
Pure Sequence
According to the rummy rules, a pure sequence is a group of three or more cards of the same suit
that are placed in a consecutive manner. No joker is used to replace any card in a pure sequence.
Every player must have at least one pure sequence to make a valid declaration.
Here are a few examples of pure sequences:
The card group 7♠-8♠-9♠ is a pure sequence. Similarly, A ♦-2♦-3♦-4♦ is also a pure
sequence. You can also use a wild card joker to complete a pure sequence but it must be used in its
original value. For example, if 6♦ is a wild card joker in a game, you can
use it in its original value to form pure sequences such as 4♦-5♦-6♦, 5♦-6♦-7♦, and 6♦-7♦-8♦.
Impure Sequence
An impure sequence is a group of three or more cards arranged in a sequence where one of the cards
has been replaced by a joker. An impure sequence can be formed either with a printed joker or with a
wild joker. Two examples of impure sequences are 7♠-8♠-PJ (printed joker) and 5♣-6♣-8♥ (wild joker).
13 Card Rummy: Set
Players can arrange their cards in either all sequences or sequences and sets according to 13 hand rummy rules. A set is a group of either three or four cards of the same rank but different suits. A set cannot have more than four cards. You can use a printed joker or a wild joker to replace a card in a set. Hera are three examples of valid sets: A♥-A♠-A♦, 8♥-8♦-PJ, 3♠-3♥-10♦(WJ).
Role of Jokers in 13 Card Rummy
Jokers are extremely important in rummy. They are used to create impure sequences as well as to
create sets. In a rummy game, there are two types of jokers.
Wild Joker
A wild joker is picked randomly at the beginning of each game. All the other cards of the same rank
also become wild jokers for the game.
For example, if 7♥ is a wild joker in a game, 7♠, 7♣ and 7♦ will also be wild jokers in that game.
Printed Joker
A printed joker is already included in the deck of 53 cards used in 13 cards rummy. It has the
picture of a joker or clown printed on it.
